Northern Kings est un groupe finlandais créé par quatre vocalistes finlandais qui viennent tous de groupe de heavy métal : Marco Hietala (Nightwish/Tarot), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), Juha-Pekka Leppäluoto (Charon/Amorphis) et J. Ahola (Teräsbetoni, si, si vous connaissez c’est le groupe qui a représenté la Finlande au concours de l’Eurovision cette année, le seul groupe de métal !). Le groupe a voulu créer quelque chose de spécial et leur idée était d’arranger des morceaux « classiques » des années 80 en version métal, métal symphonique pour être plus précise… est donc né l’album « Reborn » de cette union. C’est ainsi que nous retrouvons des morceaux comme « We Don’t Need Another Hero » de Tina Turner, « In The Air Tonight » de Phil Collins, « Brothers In Arms » de Dire Straits, « I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight » de Cutting Crew, « Ashes To Ashes » de David Bowie ou « Sledgehammer » de Peter Gabriel.

Il est certain que nous sommes face à quatre vocalistes qui possède de grandes capacités vocales et qui interprète à leur façon chacun des morceaux. Les arrangements symphoniques sont bien sûr très présents et donnent une autre dimension aux morceaux, certaines sont plus réussies que d’autres notamment « Don’t Stop Believin’ » de Journey n’est sûrement pas la meilleure de l’album même si elle est réussie musicalement et vocalement par Marco mais reste très différente de l’original. Les morceaux ont des orchestrations très travaillées avec des passages guitares ainsi que des soli également très réussis. Si chacun des vocalistes chantent seuls sur certaines chansons, d’autres fois ils se partagent le chant comme dans « We Don’t Need another Hero » et les mélanges des voix sont très réussis, chacun des chanteurs possédant une tessiture différente. Musicalement et vocalement « Reborn » est un excellent album car un travail énorme a été fait au niveau des arrangements de compositions. Mes morceaux préférés sont « We Don’t Need Another Hero », « Rebel yell », « Brothers In Arms », « I Just Died In Your Arms », « Fallen On Hard Times » mais les autres sont pas mal non plus…

Je suis tombée « par hasard » sur cet album parce que j’ai vu que Marco Hietala chanté dedans et franchement aucun regret, « Reborn » est un album à découvrir !!!

Northern Kings is a Finnish group created by four Finnish vocalist who are all coming from heavy metal groups:Marco Hietala (Nightwish/Tarot), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), Juha-Pekka Leppäluoto (Charon/Amorphis) and  J. Ahola (Teräsbetoni, yes; yes you know him, it is the group which has represented Finland in the Eurovision Contest this year, the only metal group!). The group has wanted to create something special and their idea was to rearranged 80s “classic” tracks in metal version, symphonic metal to be more precise… it is how is born the album « Reborn ». It is how we’ll find tracks such as  « We Don’t Need Another Hero » from Tina Turner, « In The Air Tonight » from Phil Collins, « Brothers In Arms » from Dire Straits, « I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight » from Cutting Crew, « Ashes To Ashes » from David Bowie or « Sledgehammer » from Peter Gabriel.

It is sure that we are facing four vocalists who have great vocals capacities and who interpret in their way each of the tracks. The symphonic arrangements are of course much present and give another dimension to the tracks, some are better than other especially « Don’t Stop Believin’ » from Journey which is certainly not the best of the album even if it is well done musically and vocally  speaking by Marco but it stays very different from the original. The tracks have very worked orchestrations with guitars passages as well as very well done soli.

If each of the vocalists sings alone on some songs, other times they share the vocals like in « We Don’t Need another Hero » and the mixes are very well done, each of the singers having a different tone. Musically and vocally speaking “Reborn” is an excellent album but a huge work has been done on the compositions arrangements level. My favourite tracks are  « We Don’t Need Another Hero », « Rebel yell », « Brothers In Arms », « I Just Died In Your Arms », « Fallen On Hard Times » but the others are not bad neither…

I discover “by chance” this album because I saw that Marco Hietala sung within and frankly no regret, “Reborn” is an album to discover!!!

Psalm est un groupe de métal extrême belge qui vient de sortir « Manifest ». Le style du groupe est un mélange de black et de death métal. Les morceaux sont froids mais bien faits. Le chant de Mastema est bien en place avec des parties black/death mais également un chant clair, bien diversifié, parfois criarde, d’autres fois plus gutturale, d’autres fois encore dans un style à la Dimmu Borgir… sans être exceptionnels, les morceaux sont bien faits, bien carrés.

L’album bénéficie d’une bonne production avec un son propre. L’intro « Through The Maze » est bien faite, assez atmosphérique, assez sombre avec des paroles en allemand mais on entre vraiment dans le sujet avec « Ecce Homo », avec riffs lourds et puissants.  Les guitares sont lourdes et puissantes et les changements de rythmique sont très fréquents et bien amenés. La section rythmique est puissante, tout au moins la batterie, mais je trouve que la basse n’est pas suffisamment présente sauf dans « Paradox » où là on l’entend très bien puisqu’à certains moments elle est toute seule !!! … morceau que je trouve excellent, très certainement le meilleur de ce mini album, enfin pour moi.

Ce sont des musiciens qui maîtrisent leurs instruments et font preuve d’une certaine technique.

«Psalm » est un groupe à découvrir et « Manifest » laisse entrevoir de bonnes perspectives d’avenir pour le groupe.

Psalm is a Belgian extreme group which has released « Manifest ». The style of the group is a mix of black and death metal. The tracks are cold but well done. Mastema’s vocals are well at place with black/death parts but also clear vocals, much varied, sometimes screaming, other times more guttural, also other times in a Dimmu Borgir style… without being exceptional, the tracks are well done, well put.

The album has the benefit of a good production with a clean sound. The intro « Through The Maze » is well done, rather atmospheric, rather dark with lyrics in German but we enter really into the subject with « Ecce Homo », with its heavy and powerful riffs. The guitars are heavy and powerful and the changing in rhythmic are very often and well put. The rhythmic section is powerful, at least the drums, but I find that the bass guitar is not sufficiently present except in « Paradox » because there it is alone at certain moments!!! … Track that I find excellent, very certainly the best one of this mini album, at least for me.

They are musicians who control their instruments and are showing a certain technique.

 «Psalm » is a group to be discovered and « Manifest » lets shows good future for the group.
